Highlights

  • Aurizon secures a major 15-year logistics agreement
  • $1.5 billion projected revenue over the initial decade
  • Shift from road to rail expected to reduce 13 million km of truck travel annually

Aurizon (ASX:AZJ), Australia’s largest rail freight operator, has secured a transformative logistics contract with mining giant BHP (ASX:BHP) for its South Australian copper operations. The agreement marks a pivotal shift toward integrated, multimodal freight transport and promises significant long-term value for both companies.

A 15-Year Integrated Logistics Engagement

The newly awarded contracts span up to 15 years and involve the end-to-end logistics management of BHP’s copper output from three major mining sites: Olympic Dam, Carrapateena, and Prominent Hill. Aurizon’s responsibilities extend across the full supply chain—encompassing rail haulage, road transport, terminal operations, port logistics, and stevedoring.

The engagement is expected to generate approximately $1.5 billion in revenue over the initial 10-year period. With this contract, Aurizon deepens its footprint in the critical resource logistics space while enabling operational efficiency gains for BHP’s Copper South Australia division.

Game-Changing Shift from Road to Rail

A central feature of the agreement is the transition of copper concentrate and cathode transport from predominantly road-based freight to rail, specifically between Pimba and Port Adelaide. This change is projected to remove the need for roughly 13 million kilometres of heavy truck travel from South Australian roads every year—delivering both safety and environmental benefits.

The move not only supports sustainability goals but also optimizes transport reliability and throughput for one of the country’s most important resource corridors.

Industry Momentum and Strategic Positioning

By offering a unified logistics platform, Aurizon strengthens its position as a comprehensive supply chain partner in the mining sector. The scale of this deal aligns with broader infrastructure trends focused on decarbonization, increased rail utilization, and long-term logistical certainty.

The company’s leadership noted the significance of this milestone, highlighting its role in supporting the continued expansion and efficiency of Australia’s copper production capabilities. With copper playing an essential role in electrification and renewable energy technologies, reliable transport solutions will remain a priority.

This long-term logistics alignment between Aurizon and BHP reinforces the strategic value of infrastructure partnerships in unlocking productivity and sustainability across Australia's resource economy.
