Westgold Resources (ASX:WGX) has awarded a significant three-year underground mining contract for its Great Fingall project in Western Australia, marking a strategic step in optimizing its operations. The contract, valued at $200 million, has been granted to Barminco, the underground mining division of Perenti (ASX:PRN). This development contract is expected to begin mobilization in July 2025.
The scope of the agreement includes comprehensive mine development and production services, with an emphasis on enhancing output from the historic Great Fingall mine. As a long-standing gold producer, Westgold continues to refine its asset base and focus resources on operations offering greater scale and efficiency.
Perenti’s leadership highlighted the project as a strong endorsement of Barminco’s technical mining capabilities. It also signals Perenti’s continuing strategy to grow its underground mining segment and achieve consistent, sustainable cash flow generation. The project is set to strengthen Perenti’s footprint within Australia, further supporting its diversified service portfolio.
From Westgold’s perspective, outsourcing the Great Fingall operation allows the company to shift personnel and equipment toward higher-priority, owner-operated mines. These include the Beta Hunt site in the Southern Goldfields and the Bluebird-South Junction mine in the Murchison region. By redeploying internal teams, Westgold aims to boost output where the operational scale and capital investments offer stronger returns.
CEO Wayne Bramwell emphasized that the relatively smaller scale of Great Fingall makes it well-suited to contract mining. This approach enables Westgold to maximize its in-house resources on more capital-intensive projects, reinforcing its strategy of enhancing productivity and leveraging its asset base.
Initial gold production from Great Fingall is anticipated in early FY26, aligning with Westgold’s broader operational timelines and production goals.
Westgold’s upcoming participation in the Noosa Mining Investor Conference, from 23-25 July 2025, is expected to provide additional insights into the company’s growth roadmap and operational outlook.
The ongoing evolution of its mining portfolio and focus on maximizing operational efficiency position Westgold as a key player in Australia's gold sector.
