On 24 October 2022, Australian airline business Virgin Australia announced the launch of its Middle Seat Lottery scheme.
Under this scheme, the company is offering guests the chance to win amazing prizes for choosing to sit in the middle seat. Virgin will declare a winner along with a new prize from a list of 26 items every week. As per the company’s official media release, this Middle Seat Lottery scheme will continue until 23 April 2023.
Meanwhile, to commemorate the launch of this customer-focused initiative, Jayne Hrdlicka, the CEO of Virgin Australia, surprised passengers on a flight to Adelaide from Melbourne by gifting each passenger sitting in a middle seat US$5,999 worth of Virgin Voyages cruises. In addition to this, the Australian airline also dropped more than 800,000 airfares from Sydney to Byron for as little as AU$55 one way in the Economy Lite category.
What’s behind the Middle Seat Lottery?
Virgin Australian conducted a social media survey in May 2022 and determined that the middle is the least popular seat, and less than 1% of travellers chose the middle seat as their first seat preference. Apart from this, the company found that 62% of Velocity Frequent Flyer members’ seat preference was the aisle, 35% chose the window seat, and only 3% passengers went for the ‘any seat’ option.
With the help of this Middle Seat Lottery scheme, Virgin aims to transform these least favourite seats into the luckiest ones by giving away prizes worth AU$230,000 to passengers choosing the middle seat or being assigned to one. To enter the lottery, travellers need to be Velocity Frequent Flyer members and should be 18 years old or above.
What will be the prizes?
Virgin will randomly choose winners weekly to obtain one of the prizes from a list of 26, a few are as the following:
- Platinum Velocity Frequent Flyer status with 1 million points.
- A Virgin Voyages Caribbean cruise that includes a return Premium Economy ticket to the United States with United Airlines.
- A chance to experience the thrill of the AFL team’s away games in 2023 with free round-trip flights as well as tickets.
- Tickets to the AFL Grand Final, merchandise, pregame boundary line experiences, flights to Melbourne, access to the "Before the Bounce" pregame launch, and more.
- Adventure packages in Cairns, including lodging, round-trip tickets, and a variety of other exhilarating activities.
