Lithium Universe Limited (ASX: LU7) has appointed Hatch Ltd to conduct an engineering study focusing on a 16,000 tpa battery grade lithium carbonate refinery. The development is consistent with LU7’s strategy to build a lithium processing hub in Québec.
Hatch is a globally renowned engineering firm with its origins in Canada. The firm has extensive experience in delivering lithium-focused projects in Quebec and worldwide.
Under the engineering study, the focus would be on defining the process and non-process infrastructure needs for the refinery. The study would also define the definitive estimated operating and capital costs.

LU7 is backed by a team of lithium experts who are guiding the execution of its strategy. Moreover, the team is enriched with knowledge and expertise in lithium carbonate processing. Demand for lithium carbonate has been growing amid the popularity of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are deployed in electric vehicles due to their varied advantages.
Under the first phase, the study would focus on determining the ideal location for the plant. The project will be advanced under Dr Jingyuan Liu, who is a recognised lithium expert in the global lithium industry and Mr John Loxton – Head of Lithium Refinery.
On the Jiangsu Lithium Carbonate plant, Mr Iggy Tan and Dr Jingyuan Liu worked with engineering firm Hatch.

As the engineering company, Hatch designed and delivered Jiangsu Lithium Carbonate plant for Galaxy Resources Limited. After the commissioning, it became the largest lithium refinery of its kind in the world.
It is to be noted that LU7 expects the design of its lithium carbonate refinery to resemble the Jiangsu Lithium Carbonate Plant.
