Altech Batteries Limited (ASX: ATC, FRA: A3Y) has completed the optimised design of the CERENERGY® battery pack after the final design collaborations with component suppliers.

The updated design of the 60KWh battery pack has a sleek stainless-steel exterior, which would have a better ability to endure high temperature changes in all types of weather conditions, from snowy to desert conditions. For the optimal insulation, vacuum-sealed, double-sided enclosure has been included in the casing of the battery.

The battery internally operates at 270 degrees Celsius, so it is essential to minimise heat transfer losses and consider human safety when it comes in contact with the battery exterior. Considering these factors, high-temperature-resistant electrical cables and connectors have been incorporated at the battery base.

To manage the cold starting issue, heating pads have been accommodated into the internal vacuum-packed casing. ATC informed that battery’s heating process generally takes almost ten hours before it is fully functional. After the battery is active, it can efficiently sustain its internal temperature, and reliance on the heating pads is reduced.

The first battery case has been sent to the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden, where it would undergo heat transfer loss testing and temperature profiling by the Fraunhofer scientists.

Data source: Company update

The company also shared an update on the two working prototype ABS60 KWh batteries, which were previously ordered from the Fraunhofer Institute partners. The two working prototypes are in production phase, and around half of the required cells are finalised. The completed cells are performing as per the expectations, informed ATC.

More

The new design of the 60KWh battery pack design includes the CERENERGY® logo on the top of the battery, and at the bottom, “ALTECH Batteries” is engraved.

The updated design includes further improvement to the five internal frames, which house 48 cells to optimise its performance. Altech has designed connector plates which electrically link the cells while maintaining insulation by employing mica insulation.

The cells are connected via precise laser-targeted welding.

The company also informed that those battery cases, which have been delivered to the Fraunhofer Institute for heat transfer loss testing and temperature profiling, will be assembled in the pack assembled, after they are finalised. Later, further cycling and long-term tests will be undertaken on the batter packs.

ATC shares traded at AU$0.069 apiece at the time of writing on 24 October 2023.
