  • WA Government launches Local Battery Manufacturing Program under Made in WA initiative

  • New funding includes direct grants and low-interest loans for battery production scale-up

  • Residential Battery Scheme expands clean energy access for thousands of households

The clean energy and battery manufacturing sector in Western Australia is set for a significant expansion with the latest announcement under the state’s All Ordinaries index-aligned industrial development roadmap. As part of the 2025–26 budget, the Western Australian Government has committed funding support to enhance residential battery production through a newly launched Local Battery Manufacturing Program.

The initiative is a key component of the state’s Made in WA strategy, which aims to fortify domestic manufacturing capabilities, create future-focused jobs, and enhance economic resilience by supporting clean energy solutions.

Local Battery Manufacturing Program Targets Production Uplift

A substantial portion of the funding will go toward the Local Battery Manufacturing Program. This includes direct grants and low-interest loans to assist Western Australian manufacturers in scaling residential battery output. Most current manufacturers have historically focused on regional, commercial, or remote energy applications, with growing intent to pivot toward the household market.

The grants program is designed to enhance the competitiveness of locally manufactured batteries both domestically and for export. Each successful applicant must match grant funding equally, ensuring industry commitment toward expanding capacity and technology adoption.

Support for Technology and Infrastructure Expansion

Alongside the grants component, the state government has earmarked additional resources for low-interest financing options and access to state-owned land. These measures are intended to stimulate investment in manufacturing infrastructure and encourage the adoption of next-generation battery technologies.

With global and local demand for renewable energy storage rising, Western Australia’s expanded support is positioned to accelerate manufacturing capabilities and localise clean energy supply chains.

Residential Battery Scheme to Benefit Thousands of Households

In parallel with industrial support, the Residential Battery Scheme continues to grow. Through a combination of state funding and the Australian Government’s national program, the scheme is expected to significantly increase the number of households with access to affordable battery storage for solar energy.

Under the program, Synergy and Horizon Power customers are eligible for financial support to install home battery systems, providing ongoing cost-of-living relief and improved energy efficiency.

Western Australian Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson highlighted that these combined efforts reflect the state’s commitment to ensuring broad community benefits from the energy transition. The policies aim to empower households to take greater control of their energy usage while supporting the local economy.

A Holistic Approach to Energy and Jobs of the Future

The new funding packages are central to the state’s push to become a leading battery manufacturing hub. The strategy not only reinforces Western Australia’s role in the renewable energy supply chain but also aligns with broader national efforts to decentralise power generation and boost domestic capabilities in cleantech manufacturing.
