Ripple Chairman Chris Larsen has recently made headlines for his substantial XRP sales in 2025, with on-chain data revealing that he has sold tokens worth approximately $116 million this year alone. This comes after years of holding the tokens, marking a significant shift in his approach to XRP distribution. The sales have been particularly notable as they coincide with a period of strong performance for XRP, which has surged following a prolonged bearish phase.
On January 6, Larsen’s wallet, known as “chrislarsen (5),” moved 10 million XRP to Coinbase. At the time, XRP was valued around $2.4, making the total transfer worth $24 million. Ten days later, another significant transaction took place, with Larsen transferring 20 million XRP to an undisclosed address. This transaction occurred shortly after XRP broke the $3 mark for the first time in seven years. The second transfer was valued at $60.5 million based on XRP’s price of $3.027 at that time.
Interestingly, the recipient address for the 20 million XRP had previously been involved in routing funds to exchanges, indicating that these tokens were likely intended for potential sales. Following this, the funds moved to exchanges, reinforcing the possibility of liquidation. This distribution pattern reflects a strategic approach to offload tokens during a period of high value, suggesting that Larsen may be capitalizing on XRP’s positive momentum.
As of the latest data, Larsen’s wallet now holds 410 million XRP, down from 500 million tokens when the XRPL went live in 2013. Since September 2024, when he initiated a larger-scale liquidation of 50 million XRP, Larsen has gradually reduced his holdings. This year alone, 40 million XRP have been moved, amounting to $116 million in value, with the balance now spread across his six XRP wallets. His total XRP holdings now stand at an impressive 2.71 billion tokens across all wallets.
These movements have generated significant attention in the crypto community, particularly due to the timing of the sales and the continued strong performance of XRP. It remains to be seen how Larsen’s distribution strategy will impact the broader market, but these developments certainly highlight his evolving relationship with the digital asset.
