A new artificial intelligence tool will help Aussies save on their energy bills by encouraging more energy efficiency across the residential housing market.

Australia is known for its "leaky" homes in which the insulation, materials, orientation and other factors create the need to spend more on heating and cooling than if the building was designed with energy efficiency in mind.

To help solve the issue, national science agency the CSIRO and data analytics giant CoreLogic have developed a new tool that produces an estimate of heating and cooling load and assigns an energy efficiency star rating for homes.

"Improving the energy efficiency of homes right around the country can reduce emissions and translate to longer-term energy and cost savings on their energy bills," CSIRO chief executive Larry Marshall said.

"Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 is one of Australia's greatest challenges, but collaborative science and technology holds the key to creating solutions that will get us there."

Homes will be rated to the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS), introduced in 1993 as a standardised approach, but through which only a limited number of properties receive ratings.

Initially the information will only be available to CoreLogic customers, but may be rolled out in a broader capacity following current trials.

CoreLogic International chief executive Lisa Claes said there was an urgent need to fill knowledge gaps around energy performance to create more efficient, sustainable and comfortable housing that cost less to run.

"It is a thrill to be at the vanguard of revolutionising energy efficiency with Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, to use innovative technology and data, to develop a solution for one of this generation's greatest challenges," she said.
