Joe Burns will receive a new baggy maroon cap, an oil painting of himself in action and a bronze cap statue for playing his 100th first-class game for Queensland, but it's the memories he will treasure most.

The 33-year-old former Test opener will notch his milestone match in the Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia on Sunday at Adelaide Oval, the same venue where he made his Shield debut in February, 2011 with an innings of 140.

Burns will become the 16th cricketer to reach 100 first-class games for Queensland. In his case, each of his first-class matches has been in the Sheffield Shield.

"It is very special," Burns said.

"For Queensland players it means so much to play 100 games because of the people who have done it previously and the respect you have got for them.

"I was fortunate enough to play with a few of them, James Hopes and Chris Hartley. It is great company to join."

Burns said he could remember his first day of Shield cricket like it was yesterday and had a few anecdotes to prove it.

"I ran out Chris Hartley on the first day and now he is chairman of selectors. It is a bit of a surprise he has actually picked me for this game," Burns grinned.

"We were 3-11. (Apart from scoring a century) I ran out two of my teammates and dropped a catch that afternoon so it was a full experience of first-class cricket on day one.

"Your first game you are excited. You are so young, dumb and naïve that you go out there and just play the game. The challenge in your 100th game is to tap into that youthful naivety and just play.

"I have great memories of playing in Adelaide so I am looking forward to getting down there this week."

Burns has scored 6646 Sheffield Shield runs for Queensland at an average of 40.52 and sits eighth on the all-time aggregate list for the state.

He also has made 1442 Test runs in 23 matches at an average of 36.97.

Burns said he was grateful and proud of his Test career and his time with Queensland.

"The best achievements are the shared experiences with the team," he said.

"With the Test team when we went to No.1 in the world it was fantastic, and winning Sheffield Shields with the Queensland boys. That is what motivates me at my age to keep going.

"There is a chance now to get a new batch of young guys in and win a (Shield) title. We are top of the table so the opportunity is there."
