In a recent report it has been revealed that New Zealand requires to further manage their greenhouse emissions in order to be able to meet the Paris Agreement. Over the span of the next few years there is need to bring down the levels of emissions and there have been three targets set for the same.
There will be the need for a 2% (every year) reduction in the number of emissions in the duration amid the year 2022 to 2025. Further, there is a need for 17% (every year) decrease in emissions in the span of 2025 to 2030. Further, between the years 2030 to 2035, there is need for a 36% decline in the number of emissions.
Suggestions by the Climate Commission
Dr. Rod Carr, Chairperson Climate Commission is of the view that even though this plan of action sounds a little ambitious, it is the need of the hour. The time for the government to make strong decisions about the climate is right now and some hard decisions need to be laid out in order to help reduce the emissions and making the country, a cleaner greener place.
He further said the country need to make these changes to meet deadlines and leave the country in the best possible shape for future generations.
Achievable, sizable goals
He further said that research has shown that these are all achievable goals, without having to shell out too much extra money and by taking ethically and socially feasible methods. However, the need of the hour is to act quickly and make sure that agriculture, businesses as well as the community in general does the same.
Some of the important parts of this transformation would mean:
- A shift towards electric vehicles
- Farming methods that are sustainable.
- Creating and maintaining permanent forests
- A reduction in the use of livestock to at least 15% by the year 2030
Jacinda Ardern Prime Minister, NZ is of the view the technologies that are required to meet the given targets by 2050 already exist and the goals are affordable as well as achievable, as advised by the Climate Commission. If the decisions made in the matter are collective as well as swift, 2050 can witness all the set goals being realised.
