Hobart's lord mayor will "vigorously" defend an assault charge levelled at her by a now-councillor following an alleged incident at a public meeting.

Anna Reynolds is facing one count of common assault for allegedly grabbing the arm of Louise Elliot, who was elected to council in October.

According to court documents, on May 11, 2022, Reynolds grabbed Ms Elliot's left bicep and pulled her down towards her face while continuing to apply pressure to her arm.

Reynolds is expected to appear in Hobart Magistrates Court in early May.

"I continue to deny any unlawful conduct and will vigorously defend the allegation," she said in a statement on social media.

"I have not been charged with a crime but with a summary offence, which means I remain eligible under the Local Government Act 1993 to remain on the council and as lord mayor."

Reynolds, who was elected lord mayor in 2018, says she was committed to working with Ms Elliot respectfully and constructively in the best interests of the community.

"As the matter is now before the court I have been legally advised against making any further comment and place my trust in the judicial system," she said.

It is understood the alleged assault occurred at a council meeting about the University of Tasmania's contentious move to the Hobart CBD.
