Dividends are the cash payment that a Company provides its shareholders from its earnings during a particular period. Companies that tend to reinvest their profits in new projects or acquisitions do not offer dividend payments.

In general, established firms with relatively predictable financial performance provide regular dividends. Companies from basic material, oil & gas, banks & financial, health and pharma and utilities sector are known for being regular dividend payers.

Start-ups, tech, and biotech companies may not offer regular dividends as they are in the initial development stage and may incur increased costs in R&D, business expansion, and other operational activities.         

Does Apple pay dividends?

One of the leading tech companies globally, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has had a long history of paying dividends. The Cupertino-based firm paid regular dividends from 1987 to 1995 before suspending the payouts. Apple started paying dividends again in 2012 and been doing that regularly since then.

The Company has enjoyed massive success since the launch of iPod. In addition, Apple’s iPhone and iPad have been a big hit since their respective launches and are extremely popular worldwide.

In FY2020, the Company provided an annual dividend of US$2.615. In Q1 and Q2 FY2021, Apple provided a dividend of US$0.205 and US$0.22, respectively. On 01 July 2021, the Company's annual dividend yield stood at 0.65%.             

A Glance at Q2 FY2021 Results

On 28 April 2021, Apple released its financial results for the Q2 ended 27 March 2021. During the quarter, the Company achieved record revenue of US$89.6 billion, up 54% as compared to the previous corresponding period and quarterly EPS of US$1.40. International sales accounted for 67% of the quarter's revenue. The Company offered a cash dividend of US$0.22 per share in Q2, up 7%, which was paid on 13 May 2021.

What has Apple been up to of late?

Gradually the Company is entering into a new and more mature stage in the evolution. It has a solid and stable product and the customer demand for its product remain strong.

  • On 29 July 2021, Apple announced that it is launching the International Collection bands for Apple Watch. The watch has 22 limited-edition Sport Loop bands with colourful designs that signify those countries around the world. Apple announced to launch the watch to celebrate the extreme drive and competitive attitude of all players and fans.
  • On 07 June 2021, Apple reviews new iPad productivity features with iPadOS 15. iPadOS 15 provide multitasking feel to the user and is more insightful, making characteristics such as Split View and Slide Over simpler to find, easier to use, and more powerful.
  • On 07 June 2021, Apple reviewed advanced customer health & wellness insights for users and new tools for assisting loved ones. Building on the existing innovative health characteristics of the iPhone and Apple Watch, iOS 15 would give users the ability to safely share the data with key people in their lives, such as family members and physician, and receive insights into the health trends of their loved ones. The new features introduced in iOS 15 would help the user detect, measure, and know changes in a person's health data.
