Australia's historic run in the World Baseball Classic has finally been extinguished by one of the sport's powerhouse nations Cuba in the quarter-finals despite one last sterling effort from Dave Nilsson's battlers.

After reaching the last-eight for the first time in their history, the Australians eventually succumbed 4-3 in Wednesday's last-eight clash at the Tokyo Dome but only after Rixon Wingrove's slugging had helped them make a real fight of it.

The left-hander's RBI enabled the Australians to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning after teammate Darryl George had almost homered.

Then after the Cubans had taken control to move 4-1 ahead after a three-run fifth inning, the left-hander Wingrove cracked a two-run homer that brought the Australians right back into the contest.

Ultimately, though, despite the Australians threatening to get back on terms at the top of the eighth with two men on base, the Cubans extricated themselves from trouble and sealed victory with pitcher Raidel Martinez's clinical closing effort.

It ended a wonderful tournament for the Australians, whose breakthrough into the knockout stages even rivalled their semi-final win over Japan and silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.
