COVID-19 vaccines may not be an end all answer for the Aviation Sector

Summary

  • It is believed that vaccines may not be a solution to make the danger clouds over aviation sector wither away.
  • Coronavirus induced borders of the nations amid opening and closure, as per the regional situation could still cause uncertainty.
  • The total air traffic noted in 2020 was about two-thirds of the traffic recorded in the previous year triggering severe stress on the industry.

It was recently revealed by several airlines that despite the COVID-19 vaccines now in the process of being circulated across the world, the aviation industry’s troubles are far from over.

Having witnessed one of the worst years ever in 2020 due to the layoffs, travel restrictions, as well as uncertainties surrounding the opening of international borders, it is going to be a while till things get back to the normal.

Airlines industry witnessed heavy losses in 2020

The total air traffic witnessed in the year 2020 was about two-thirds of the traffic recorded in the previous year and this has caused severe stress on the industry. If predictions by the International Air Transport Association are to be believed, the year 2021 seems to be no better. There are already forecasted losses on international tourism industry standing at NZ$54 billion in play.

Mr Peter Harbison the chairman and founder of the Capa Centre of Aviation is of the view that in terms of airlines, the first half of 2021 seems bleak and they will have to struggle through it.

Vaccine mandatory before an Air Travel or not?

Earlier in November, last year it was still not certain whether passengers will be required to show a proof of vaccination as part of their travel documents in the near future. Ed Bastain, the CEO of Delta Airlines was of the view that international flights may have such requirements in the future, and the order for the same may be issued by international government authorities, rather than individual airlines.

Back then, Airports Council International, the governing body for all the airports in the world did not comment on the vaccine being a travel requisite. They were of the view that airports should have a right to choose how they want to go about it. Their main concern in the matter was that if vaccines are made mandatory, it may discourage more people from travelling, hence proving to be a problem for the industry that had been already facing one of the worst times.

As per the latest updates, market experts believe that with the news circulating in the market on vaccines reaching to the people, they have again started looking for the airline travel bookings. This could further lead towards a rise in travelling around the world, giving a hope to resurrect the industry.
