PM Boris Johnson on Friday, 8 January, designated former Business Secretary Alok Sharma as the full-time President of UN COP26 climate conference that is scheduled to take place in Glasgow in November. Kwasi Kwarteng has been appointed as the Secretary of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in place of Sharma.
Glasgow climate summit
The Glasgow climate conference will be the largest summit ever hosted by the UK, which is expected to see representatives including experts, leaders and campaigners from around 200 countries. The successful Glasgow summit will be essential for the Downing Street administration in fulfilling the objectives prescribed by the Paris Agreement. It will further provide a direction to the goal of reducing global carbon emissions.
Objective of net zero
The UK administration has been exemplary in its efforts of bringing down the carbon emissions at the fastest rate as compared to any other similar developed nation. As a part of the Prime Minister’s Ten Point Plan, the UK has committed to cut down the carbon emissions by at least 68 per cent by 2030 from the present levels.
According to the PM’s Ten Point Plan, the Downing Street administration is working forward to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, a step that is likely to expedite the objective of reaching a net zero country by 2050.
The Plan also focuses on transforming the energy efficiency of homes and public buildings in the UK with investment into greener technology supporting the renewable energy projects across the widespread geography of Britain.
Sharma as COP26 President
Climate change has been the biggest challenge of our time and with the UK’s Presidency of UN COP26 climate conference, the country has a unique opportunity of working with partners around the world to work together in delivering a greener, and cleaner globe building a better habitat for the present and future generations, Alok Sharma said on being appointed as the President of COP26.
Alok Sharma, as the President of COP26, will chair the Climate Action Implementation Committee coordinating the government’s objective of attaining net zero emissions by 2050. Alok Sharma will continue as a full member of the Cabinet and will be based in the Cabinet Office.
The UK’s climate diplomacy has been under the guidance of Alok Sharma after he assumed the role in February last year. In December 2020, the UK co-hosted the Climate Ambition Summit that witnessed 75 leaders from across the globe setting out new commitments to climate action.
Kwarteng as Business Secretary
Kwasi Kwarteng, as the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, will be leading the work on business, science and innovation with his experience of working in the department, across government and with industry. Kwarteng will be bringing together the work to unleash growth and investment in his new role as Secretary of State.
