Summary

  • Boris Johnson and Joe Biden met for the first time in the seaside resort of Carbis Bay.
  • The new document read that the two nations remained united on the spirit of territorial integrity, peaceful resolution of tensions, and sovereignty.
  • The historic declaration was made in 1941 by then British prime minister Winston Churchill and the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt

After Boris Johnson’s controversial support to former US President Donald Trump, Johnson had his first public meeting with the present US president Joe Biden, and it took off on a publicly agreeable beginning.

Both the premiers inspected a new form of Atlantic Charter that is planned to be signed by them. The reincarnation of the 80-year-old document, signed after World War II, is meant to reiterate the Western alliance as a show of strength by democratic countries that are battered by autocratic rivals like China and Russia. This document is meant to highlight the shifting nature of threats 80 years on.

The historic declaration was made in 1941 by then British prime minister Winston Churchill and the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which spelt the British and American goals for the world as World War II ended.

The new document read that the two nations remained united on the spirit of territorial integrity, peaceful resolution of tensions, and sovereignty. Both the nations opposed any kind of interference in terms of spreading disinformation or other ways of meddling with an internal affairs, like elections and reaffirmed their commitments of having transparency in debt managements and sound governance of debt relief. It also said that the two nations would defend the internationally lawful use of the seas.

Directly taking a stand against China and Russia, the document calls upon other Western allies to oppose all the influences to meddle in internal affairs of nations. It said that both the countries were committed to maintaining international stability and collective security against modern threats, including cyber-attacks.

But the meeting happened at the backdrop of Biden’s private admonishment of Johnson for actions taken by his government that could lead to sectarian tensions in Northern Ireland.

President Biden has been a staunch opponent of the Brexit that has been championed by prime minister Johnson. Biden had once described Johnson as the emotional and physical clone of the previous US President Donald Trump.

Biden still has reservations on how the Brexit could have an impact on the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland’s peace treaty. The British administration has not been able to offer a choice that is acceptable to the EU. Ireland is close to the American president’s heart as his family has ties with the nation.
