Australia is preparing to launch its new low-cost domestic airline, Bonza, in early 2022 amid expectations of a boom in the air travel sector in a post-COVID-19 pandemic world. Backed by Miami-based private investment firm 777 Partners, Bonza is promising ‘ultra-low prices’ to customers.
Bonza will launch its service with all-economy Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Australia is the only nation of the 15 largest domestic aviation markets globally without an independent low-cost airline.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on 10 October 2021 said Australia would consider opening its international borders by 1 November 2021 for vaccinated travellers. The country may open its borders once 80% of the adult population is fully vaccinated. Australians would be allowed to travel to safe countries when 80% of the eligible adults get fully vaccinated. Vaccinated adults can hope for more freedom from coronavirus-induced restrictions once 70% of them are fully jabbed. Morrison believes that the country could meet this target by year-end.
Australia isolated itself from the rest of the coronavirus pandemic-raged world in the last year and a half with lockdowns. The unprecedented step by the Australian government to almost entirely sealing its border for foreign visitors and banning its citizens from leaving the country was taken in March 2020.
