When people hear cryptocurrency they usually think of bitcoin. This is not unusual of course considering that Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalisation. However, there are other cryptocurrencies, for example, Meme Coins.

Meme Coins, as the name would suggest, are cryptos based on Internet memes. Arguably, the most famous of these is Dogecoin, which is a coin based upon the 2014 meme of a smiling Shiba Inu breed of dog.

This particular meme coin has spawned many spin-offs including Baby Doge and Shiba Inu, the latter of which has had an impressive 2021, rising when the rest of the market has been falling.

But meme coins don’t end there. There are a whole host of meme coins available on the market. Here are five less known meme coins.

Samoyedcoin (SAMO)

Samoyedoin, launched in May this year, was a brave move considering it was during the beginning of the market wide crash which saw many cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, lose more than half their value.

Samoyedcoin is inspired by Dogecoin since it’s a crypto named after a dog breed. The Samoyed is a breed of dog originating from Eastern Europe, same as Solana’s beloved cofounder Anatoly Yakovenko!

SAMO began to rise significantly at the beginning of October and took off into the stratosphere later that month. In fact, from October 20 till November 1, the price of SAMO has skyrocketed from US$0.016 to US$0.145, a rise of more than 800 percent in less than two weeks. On November 2 at 4:49 PM AEDT, the meme coin is trading at US$0.09138.

Tiger King (TKING)

Squid Game isn’t the only Netflix show to spawn a meme coin. Months before the Korean survival drama, which has since become a cultural phenomenon, Tiger King (TKING) entered the crypto market in May 2021.

TKING is a ground-breaking utility token for ChainChat - the first of its kind decentralised application (DApp), which features private wallet-to-wallet messaging, with an integrated escrow service. This makes it possible for NFT buyers to negotiate a price and complete a swap all within the same application, eliminating brokerage fees.

TKING entered the market at US$0.000005661 and has recently rocketed to US$0.0003212 – a rise of around 5574 percent.

Hoge Finance (HOGE)

Launched in February 2021, HOGE, formerly known as Hoge Finance or Hogecoin, describes itself as a community-driven DeFi auto-staking token with a capped and deflationary supply.  Initial HOGE supply was 1 trillion with half of those permanently burned at launch.

HOGE was launched with the intention of simply being deflationary. This means that a 2 percent tax is levied on each HOGE transaction. 1 percent of that tax is then sent to the burn wallet and permanently removed from the supply. The other 1 percent is redistributed to all wallets holding HOGE outside of exchanges.

Later, however, a team of HOGE founders with a larger vision stewarded the project toward a more philanthropic and utilitarian roadmap.

After being valued at US$0.00000815 on October 1, 2021, HOGE shot up to US$0.000643, where it sits at the time of writing.

MonaCoin (MONA)

Created in 2013, MonaCoin is an open-source peer-to-peer payment network prominently used in Japan.

It is named after  an Internet meme based on a cat-like figure called Mona.

It got pushed into the limelight when it was featured on a popular Tokyo TV station, that reported a man purchasing a plot of land in Nagano with MonaCoin.

Doge Dash (DOGEDASH)

Out of all these meme coins Doge Dash is the one whose value hasn’t grown considerably. This is despite the price skyrocketing to over US$4.00 in April.

After a massive dive, it then hit another peak in May, where it hit just over US$3.00. Since then, it’s begun a gradual decline to US$ 0.0009042 where it sits at the time of writing.

However, this coin’s trajectory hasn’t gone the same direction as the others on this list.
