Offchain Labs, the creator of the Arbitrum blockchain, has announced the mainnet launch of Arbitrum Stylus, a new virtual machine designed to facilitate decentralized application (DApp) development by integrating WebAssembly (WASM) languages. This launch aims to streamline DApp creation and improve performance while lowering gas fees.

{Arbitrum} (ARB)  Stylus is designed to overcome common barriers in Web3 development by allowing developers to use familiar WASM-compatible languages such as Rust, C, and C++. This approach aligns with a broader trend of layer-2 scaling solutions moving beyond the limitations of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to incorporate new capabilities from various programming languages.

Ed Felten, co-founder and chief scientist of Offchain Labs, highlighted that Stylus merges two main smart contract paradigms: EVM-based contracts and traditional programming languages. This integration supports a diverse range of developer tools, enabling them to build on Arbitrum with the languages and tools that best suit their needs.

Stylus also boasts impressive performance metrics. According to Felten, programs written in Stylus run up to 70 times faster than those on the EVM. This efficiency allows Stylus-based DApps to execute more transactions within the gas limit, reducing overall costs and enhancing the scalability of applications.

Steven Goldfeder, CEO and co-founder of Offchain Labs, noted that Stylus could help developers expand their market offerings. The new system supports high-computation tasks more effectively than traditional EVM-based applications, making it a robust solution for applications requiring significant computational power.

Looking ahead, Offchain Labs plans to integrate additional popular protocols, including zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, into Arbitrum. These integrations aim to address the high costs and computational demands currently associated with advanced cryptographic methods. Felten envisions a hybrid protocol approach as the future of Web3, which will enable more sophisticated decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and drive further innovation in the space.

Overall, the launch of Arbitrum Stylus represents a significant advancement in DeFi and blockchain technology, offering developers a versatile platform for creating high-performance, cost-efficient DApps.
