The raging climate change crisis is worsening year after year. Every year, we see either wildfires or draughts, heavy winds, or extreme weather conditions in several parts of the world. Governments globally have sworn to take protective measures to curb the effects of climate change; however, very little ground-level change do we see. Nevertheless, right in the beginning of 2022, a new wildfire crisis has captured the major headlines. Let’s see what’s happening in Argentina!

Argentina’s wildfires are getting worse

Argentina, the eighth-largest country globally, is significantly suffering from the shackles of extreme wildfires. However, such fires are not new to the country. In July 2020, Argentina’s delta fires raged out of control. The current wildfires have burned around 50000 hectares of land in Northern Argentina.

What is causing these wildfires?

Wildfires are part of the natural activities caused by heat, dryness, and such phenomenon. However, the heat level has been consistently increasing because of climate change, with lesser rainfall; thus, higher draughts and drier winds. All these cause such massive wildfires. The dry weather phenomenon is called the La Nina effect.

The effects of devastating wildfires in Northern Argentina

As a result of these raging fires, animals are left out of their habitat; people are getting displaced from their homes. Additionally, 10% of the burning land was a part of Ibera National Park, which is home to about 4,000 species of plants and animals.

There have been severe transportation issues in the area. The air quality has also degraded because of excessive smoke in the air. People are hoping that these devastating fires will cool down by heavy rainfall. However, looking at the weather forecast, heavy rain chances seem less.

Glancing at the larger picture of worldwide wildfires

The UN Environment Program recently released a report in which the organisation stated that wildfires are getting worse globally and governments are not prepared for the same. Additionally, parts like Eastern Australia, Northern India, Western US, to name a few, are already facing more blazes.

According to the report, wildfires will increase by 50% by the end of the century. In fact, the areas that are highly unlikely to experience such fires like the Arctics won’t be immune to such fires anymore by that time.

All in all, governments need to make robust plans to fight the raging crisis of climate change. The only solution to win the battle against climate change is to strictly adhere to the guidelines and objectives of the Paris agreement.
