The Canadian benchmark index gained 281.66 points during the trading session on Friday, October 24, and closed at 18,860.95. Meanwhile, the junior index was up by 1.04 per cent to 593.04 points.
The base metals sector recorded significant gains of 6.45 per cent. Energy, financial, and health care sectors too were among the top performers of the day with gains of 1.7 per cent, 1.35 per cent, and 1.89 per cent.

Volume Active
NorZinc Ltd. (TSX: NZC) recorded the highest trading volume, and its price soared by 20 per cent on October 21. The trading volume of the NZC stock was 8.88 million.
One of the largest tech companies in the country, Shopify Inc. (TSX: SHOP), registered a volume of 5.74 million shares and got hold of the second spot.
Wall Street update
The stock markets in the United States were up, and the NASDAQ Composite index was up by 2.3 per cent or 244.87 points. It closed at 10,859.72.
The NYSE Composite surged by 2.19 per cent and closed at 14,144.05 points.
Commodities
The WTI Futures were down by 1.08 per cent to US$ 85.05 per barrel, and the Brent Oil Futures gained 1.21 per cent to US$ 93.5 a barrel.
The price of gold was up by 1.19 per cent to US$ 1,656.3 per troy ounce.
Currency news
The CAD/USD also recorded a positive momentum, up 0.91 per cent to 0.7330.
