  • Facebook Inc. (FB: US or NASDAQ: FB) attached Apple Inc. (APPL: US or NASDAQ: APPL) in a series of full-page newspaper advertisement on December 16, alleging that the iPhone producer’s to-be-launched mobile software platform around data collecting and advertising are harmful for small enterprises.
  • The social media giant via the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post stated that it is standing against “Apple” for small businesses. The newspaper ad highlighted upcoming changes to Apple’s iOS 14 operating system saying that it will curtail the ability of firms like Facebook and Google to collect personal data from iPhone users, which will have a direct impact on advertising.
  • Facebook earlier informed investors that Apple’s modifications, planned to go live in early 2021, will face significant headwinds because most of its advertisers are small enterprises. Apple reverted in November, condemning Facebook for breaching user privacy.
  • After this Facebook started attacking Apple’s 30 per cent charges for in-app shopping for certain businesses that shifted online because of the pandemic crisis. Apple, in response, said it would not cut this fee through the end of 2020. In November, the iPhone maker extended that waiver through June 2021.
  • While not applicable to Facebook apps, Apple will cut App Store fees from 30 per cent to 15 per cent starting next year for developers that make up to US$ 1 million per annum.
