The old dollar bills will be in use for day-to-day transactions till the end of December 2020, after which businesses can no longer accept them.
In an official reminder on November 19, the Bank of Canada said that bills of C$ 1, C$ 2, C$ 25, C$ 500 and C$ 1,000 will no longer have legal tender status January 1, 2021 onward.
The central bank stressed that these dollar bill will not lose their face value and people can redeem them at local financial institutions or send them directly to the BoC.
