Elon Musk's Neuralink has been accused of subjecting monkeys to mistreatment while testing brain implants for the company. Neuralink is a biotech company owned by Mr Musk, and it is involved in developing brain-machine interfaces.

An animal rights group called the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed a state lawsuit and complaint against the University of California, Davis, for violating Animal Welfare Act.

On its website, PCRM has mentioned that the university received US$ 1.4 million from Neuralink to carry out experiments on at least 23 monkeys.

The committee has filed a complaint on around 600 pages of documents prepared after PCRM filed a public records lawsuit last year.

In the complaint, it is alleged that portions of the skulls were removed to implant electrodes in the brains of monkeys as part of the development of a brain-machine interface.

What is Neuralink?

It is a neurotechnology company that aims to build devices embedded in human brain. According to reports, these devices are designed to record brain activity and simulate it.

According to the company's website, Neuralink is developing devices to help people with paralysis. It aims to develop products for people with disabilities.

Last month, it was widely reported that Neuralink was ready to start the first clinical trials with a batch of human patients. The trial was supposed to be aimed at treating paralysis.

However, it is uncertain if the human trials will begin. On February 14, Neuralink posted on Twitter that its team respects and honours the animals and information from medical records and study data can be misleading without proper context.

Bottom line

It appears that potential investors often search for Neuralink's stock or its initial public offering (IPO) plans. Private companies go public to raise money from public investors, and sometimes investing in a newly-listed company proves profitable for early investors.

However, as trading in a stock market is risky, sometimes investing in IPO stocks could be a loss-making decision.

Neuralink has not announced its IPO plans and remains a privately-held company. Therefore, retail investors can't buy Neuralink stock.
