BrainChip Holdings Ltd (ASX:BRN), the world’s first commercial producer of neuromorphic AI IP, has secured a AU$1.8 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for neuromorphic radar signal processing. The award was granted under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which funds cutting-edge research to support U.S. government missions.
The contract, titled “Mapping Complex Sensor Signal Processing Algorithms onto Neuromorphic Chips,” builds on a successful demonstration of radar processing algorithms by a multinational aerospace and defense customer. The project will leverage BrainChip’s Temporal Event Neural Network (TENNs) algorithm framework and the next-generation Akida 2.0 hardware to develop advanced radar signal processing models.
Revolutionizing Neuromorphic Radar Processing
The program focuses on micro-Doppler signature analysis, a radar processing technique that provides unprecedented capabilities for activity discrimination. BrainChip’s neuromorphic technology, which delivers higher performance at ultra-low power, is ideally suited for applications on SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power, and Cost)-constrained platforms such as military systems, spacecraft, and robotics.
BrainChip's Akida 2.0 hardware, combined with the TENNs algorithm, has demonstrated the ability to execute models efficiently while significantly reducing power consumption compared to traditional accelerators. This makes it highly attractive for both commercial and government markets.
The AU$1.8M contract will be paid over a 12-month period, with AFRL beginning milestone payments in January 2025 and continuing until February 2026. As part of the agreement, BrainChip will also enter a subcontractor partnership with the aerospace and defense company, providing research and development services for a fixed fee of AU$800,000.
Market Response and Strategic Implications
Following the announcement, BrainChip’s share price surged by over 16% to AU$0.26 on 10 December 2024, reflecting strong investor confidence in the company's expanding role in neuromorphic AI and defense applications.
This contract marks a significant milestone for BrainChip, highlighting the growing adoption of its neuromorphic technology in critical defense applications.
