BrainChip (ASX:BRN), a leader in neuromorphic computing, has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $2.7 million by the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The deal focuses on leveraging the company’s proprietary technology for radar signal processing under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which promotes cutting-edge solutions to support government initiatives.
The collaboration will incorporate neuromorphic engineering principles that emulate human brain functionality to enhance radar signal applications. This innovative approach is expected to offer significant advancements in system size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) parameters.
Advancing Radar Signal Processing
The contract underscores the potential of BrainChip’s technology, particularly its application in mission-critical environments. Neuromorphic radar signal processing will be implemented on mobile platforms, making efficiency and scalability paramount. BrainChip’s commercial off-the-shelf hardware demonstrated the successful execution of radar algorithms, paving the way for this agreement.
Chief executive officer Sean Hehir noted that the partnership highlights the capability of neuromorphic computing to deliver high-performance, low-power solutions. This aligns with AFRL’s goal of improving radar signal efficiency for critical missions.
Technological Edge
At the heart of the project is BrainChip’s Akida 2.0 neural processor and its Temporal Neural Networks (TENNs) framework. The proprietary event-based technology allows for incremental learning and high-speed inference, offering enhanced performance with reduced power consumption compared to conventional neural network accelerators.
Additionally, the company’s aTENNuate technology complements its existing portfolio, reinforcing BrainChip’s position as a leader in neuromorphic engineering. These advancements are expected to bring significant improvements to applications in military, aerospace, robotics, and commercial sectors.
Future Collaborations
BrainChip is set to collaborate with a major aerospace and defense contractor to fulfill the contract's objectives. The company will focus on optimizing its proprietary algorithms to operate on Akida 2.0 hardware, ensuring ultra-low power consumption and superior performance for radar signal processing tasks.
The agreement includes $2.7 million in payments over 12 months, with $1.2 million allocated for algorithm development and optimization. These efforts will further extend BrainChip’s influence across multiple industries requiring efficient cognitive communication systems on SWaP-C constrained platforms.
Well-Funded Growth
BrainChip remains financially robust, supported by a recent equity capital raise of $25 million. This funding positions the company to continue its advancements in neuromorphic technology while delivering on its latest contract with the AFRL.
