Woodside, a renowned energy corporation, has inked a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea's SK E&S Co. Ltd. (SK E&S) to embark on a collaborative exploration into the potential establishment of a low-carbon hydrogen value chain. This arrangement seeks to delve into hydrogen, ammonia, and other related products as viable alternatives in the quest for sustainable energy.

Within the scope of this MoU, Woodside and SK E&S have charted out a roadmap to jointly investigate various facets. This includes examining long-term agreements for ammonia and hydrogen offtake, assessing equity stakes in projects linked to ammonia and hydrogen production, and seizing opportunities in project engineering supplies. Additionally, both parties intend to align with existing and proposed governmental policies in South Korea and Australia that can facilitate the development of a lower-carbon hydrogen value chain.

Management’s opinion

Shaun Gregory, Woodside's Executive Vice President for New Energy, emphasized the MoU's reflection of an augmented demand for large-scale decarbonized energy solutions such as lower-carbon hydrogen and ammonia from industry partners across the Asia Pacific region. Gregory highlighted Woodside's unparalleled experience of over 35 years as a pioneer developer and operator of intricate energy production facilities. He positioned Woodside as a pivotal entity geared to play a vital role in the development of the hydrogen and ammonia value chain, particularly in South Korea. This collaboration aims to steer the development of innovative energy products and services, enabling customer decarbonization, unlocking novel market prospects, and contributing to the broader climate goals and net-zero aspirations across the Asia Pacific region.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Woodside and SK E&S signifies a proactive stride toward fostering sustainable energy solutions, particularly in the lower-carbon hydrogen domain. The concerted efforts aim not only to innovate but also to contribute to environmental goals, potentially shaping the energy landscape across the Asia Pacific region.
