Pointerra Limited (ASX:3DP) has secured a US$2 million (A$3.2 million) extension to its existing research and development (R&D) program with the US Department of Energy (DOE). The contract will see Pointerra continue its work on a hurricane impact analysis program, which aims to enhance the resilience of power grids in regions impacted by hurricanes.
Program Details
As part of the program, Pointerra will use its Pointerra3D digital twin solution to generate 2D and 3D models of electric utility grids in hurricane-affected areas. This includes developing a change detection model to assess the impacts of recent hurricanes on grid assets, as well as analyzing the effectiveness of hardening strategies used by utilities. The findings will be compiled into a report that will highlight best practices for other utilities, with a public webinar to discuss the results.
The extension emphasizes Pointerra’s growing presence in the US electric utility sector, which is heavily invested in multi-billion dollar grid resilience programs. The DOE plans to scale the best practices developed in this program across multiple regions in North America.
Contract Terms
The contract extension is managed by the DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, through its intermediary, DEFENSEWERX, doing business as ENERGYWERX. Pointerra will be paid based on milestone completion and expects the program to be completed by 31 December 2025.
Pointerra will incur typical operating costs for delivering the program, and the contract is subject to commercial terms, including non-performance termination clauses.
