Highlights

  • Successful completion of fracture stimulation at Canyon-1H well.
  • Initiation of 30-day flow testing phase to gather reservoir data.
  • Potential to address gas supply shortages on Australia’s east coast.

Omega Oil and Gas (ASX:OMA) has reported significant progress at its Canyon-1H horizontal well, located in the Taroom Trough, Queensland. This milestone was achieved following the successful completion of fracture stimulation operations, undertaken by global services provider Halliburton. The meticulously planned frac program was initiated on March 4th, with the completion occurring in line with the company's schedule. All eight stages of the operation were successfully completed, with 100% of the proppant placed.

Flow Testing and Data Collection

Currently, Omega Oil and Gas is conducting the clean-up phase of the flow test, essential for evaluating the well's production potential. During this phase, the fluid utilized during the fracturing process is allowed to flow back to the surface. Encouragingly, gas and condensates have already started flowing alongside the frac fluid. The flow testing, estimated to last approximately 30 days, is critical for gathering detailed data regarding the reservoir performance of the Canyon sandstone.

Canyon-1H: A Game-Changer for Gas Supply

The Canyon-1H well plays a pivotal role in testing the productivity of the Canyon sandstone reservoir in the Taroom Trough. Given the geological characteristics noted during the 822-meter horizontal drilling section, there is potential for commercial gas flow rates. The successful diagnostic fracture injection test conducted earlier in January highlighted promising reservoir properties, further bolstered by high overpressure readings of 0.79 psi/ft.

The realization of successful flow testing at Canyon-1H could unlock trillions of cubic feet of gas, effectively addressing projected gas supply challenges on Australia’s east coast. Situated just 150 kilometers from the Wallumbilla hub, the project presents viable opportunities for both domestic and export markets.

The Canyon Project stands as a significant step forward for Omega Oil and Gas, marking their commitment to addressing energy needs in eastern Australia. As the flow testing phase progresses, the results could have pivotal implications for the region's energy landscape.
