Highlights:

  • Omega Oil and Gas confirms high overpressure and favorable reservoir properties in Canyon-1H well.
  • Final preparations underway for fracture stimulation and flowback program, scheduled for February.
  • Success in Taroom Trough could help alleviate Australia's gas supply challenges.

Omega Oil and Gas (ASX:OMA) is making significant strides with its Canyon-1H horizontal well in the Taroom Trough, located in Queensland, Australia. The company has reported high overpressure readings and favorable reservoir characteristics, marking a crucial step toward increasing gas production in the region. These developments come after conducting a diagnostic fracture injection test, which has confirmed positive results. The test revealed high overpressure within the Canyon sandstone reservoir, with measurements of 0.79 psi/ft, as well as reservoir properties that align with previous findings from both the vertical and horizontal drilling sections.

Fracture Stimulation Program Gears Up

Following the success of the fracture injection test, Omega is making final preparations for the fracture stimulation and flowback program, which is expected to take place by the end of February. Halliburton, a leading global service provider, has been contracted to carry out the stimulation, using a comprehensive approach that includes eight stages of fracture stimulation. This process will play a critical role in unlocking the reservoir's gas resources. Initial signs of gas presence in the Canyon-1H well are evident, with condensate appearing throughout the well's extensive horizontal section.

Regional Context and Industry Dynamics

The Taroom Trough has attracted significant attention from the energy industry due to its speculated multi-trillion cubic feet of gas resources. Omega Oil and Gas, with its strategic position in the region, aims to contribute to addressing the forecasted gas supply challenges that are expected to affect Australia's east coast. The success of other industry players, including Shell's recent appraisal wells in the area, has created a favorable backdrop for Omega’s ongoing operations. Omega's advancements in the Canyon-1H well complement regional efforts to secure reliable gas sources for the future.
