Highlights
- New Exploration Focus: Sun Silver is investigating the widespread presence of antimony at its flagship Maverick Springs project in Nevada.
- Domestic Opportunity: The initiative comes amid global trade tensions and increasing U.S. reliance on overseas antimony, positioning the project as a potential local supply source.
- Comprehensive Resource Review: Ongoing re-logging, pXRF testing, and re-assaying of historical core samples aim to integrate antimony into future resource updates.
Sun Silver Ltd (ASX:SS1) has revealed plans to delve deeper into the substantial antimony content discovered at its renowned Maverick Springs project in Nevada. Traditionally known as a gold and silver venture—with an inferred JORC resource of 423 million ounces silver equivalent at an impressive 67.25 grams per tonne—Maverick Springs now presents a compelling opportunity to tap into an in-demand mineral amid shifting global trade dynamics.
Recent assay results have highlighted that Maverick Springs contains significant levels of antimony, with some samples registering up to 13,199 parts per million (or 1.32%). Although the project’s primary focus has been on precious metals, the newfound potential of antimony has prompted Sun Silver to re-assess its resource portfolio. The company is currently in the process of re-logging, deploying portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) testing, and re-assaying historical core samples. These efforts aim to accurately determine the full extent of antimony mineralization and to integrate these findings into upcoming mineral resource updates.
The strategic pivot toward antimony is further fueled by recent international trade developments. In response to export restrictions imposed by China—initiated as a countermeasure to tariffs introduced under the previous U.S. administration—the global supply of antimony has faced significant disruptions. With around 90% of U.S. antimony supply sourced from overseas, predominantly from China, Russia, and Tajikistan, the need for a reliable domestic supply is more critical than ever. This scenario presents a timely opportunity for Sun Silver to potentially position Maverick Springs as a vital local source of antimony, thereby reducing the nation’s dependency on foreign markets.
Managing Director Andrew Dornan expressed optimism about the implications of this development. “With the U.S. being heavily reliant on foreign antimony supply and against the backdrop of recent export restrictions from China, our project is emerging as a potential domestic source for this critical mineral,” he commented. Dornan emphasized that the strategic exploration of antimony could add a valuable dimension to the company’s already robust portfolio, opening new avenues for growth and investment.
