  • Ionic Rare Earths expands rare earth recycling efforts in UK, US, and Brazil
  • Secures government support and develops new magnet technologies
  • Strengthens rare earth supply chains outside China, including project in Uganda

Ionic Rare Earths Ltd (ASX:IXR) has announced strategic developments across its rare earth recycling and refining initiatives in the UK, US, Brazil, and Uganda. These initiatives are designed to build an integrated supply chain focused on magnet recycling and advanced processing technologies, aimed at creating resilient alternatives to traditional sources.

The updates come at a time when global concerns are growing over concentrated rare earth supplies. While Ionic Rare Earths is not currently part of the ASX 100 companies, its multinational activities reflect the scale and ambition typically seen among top-tier listed firms.

UK Momentum in Recycling Technologies

In the UK, Ionic's subsidiary Ionic Technologies is progressing toward developing a local supply chain for rare earth magnets. A collaboration with stakeholders, including industrial and government entities, is helping fuel this transition. Ionic is leading a consortium that has secured public funding to build a domestic magnet ecosystem, beginning with end-of-life magnet recycling at its Belfast demonstration plant.

Engagement with UK government stakeholders highlights the company’s central role in addressing the demand for mid-stream processing technologies. These efforts aim to recover and separate rare earth oxides required for magnet manufacturing.

US and Brazil Projects Show Parallel Progress

Beyond Europe, Ionic is working with prospective partners in the US on facilities that could support rare earth separation and recycling operations. The initiative includes dispatching high-purity samples and progressing toward detailed engineering and planning, including potential locations under the company’s Viridion joint venture.

In Brazil, Ionic’s partnership with (ASX:VMM) through their 50:50 venture Viridion has already delivered recycled materials processed using proprietary technology. These samples are undergoing testing for magnet production. The team has also secured land for a recycling hub and is under evaluation for government support, targeting an industrial-scale facility modeled after the Belfast demonstration plant.

Makuutu Project Adds Depth to Rare Earth Pipeline

In Uganda, Ionic’s Makuutu Heavy Rare Earths Project, held through a majority stake, has become a strategic asset. The site contains elements crucial to high-performance magnet manufacturing, and its development aligns with international efforts to diversify supply chains. A mining license has already been granted for part of the project, with additional permits underway.
