Highlights

  • Livium Ltd (ASX:LVM) subsidiary Envirostream receives $850,000 grant from the Western Australian government to support development of a new battery recycling facility.
  • The facility will serve as a key hub for battery sorting, storage, and discharge prior to processing at Campbellfield, Victoria.
  • The project aligns with WA’s broader e-waste policy and Livium’s national roadmap for a circular economy in battery recycling.

Livium Ltd (ASX:LVM), through its subsidiary Envirostream, has secured $850,000 in funding under the Western Australian Government’s E-waste Infrastructure Grants program. This strategic grant aims to support the development of a purpose-built battery recycling facility in Western Australia, a critical move in enhancing Australia’s capacity to process end-of-life batteries sustainably and domestically.

The new facility is expected to feature advanced battery sorting and dismantling technology designed to streamline the handling of spent batteries collected across the state. These batteries will be sorted, discharged, and safely stored at the WA site before being transferred to Envirostream’s Campbellfield processing facility in Victoria, where they will be refined into Mixed Metal Dust (MMD) and other valuable recovered materials. This process supports domestic recycling efforts and reduces reliance on offshore waste processing routes.

Envirostream’s WA operations mark a foundational step in Livium’s long-term ambition to create a national, integrated battery recycling infrastructure. By building a localised battery handling and recycling ecosystem, the company seeks to establish state-by-state capabilities that can scale alongside increasing volumes of spent batteries generated across the country. The strategic development of such a network is anticipated to enhance operational efficiency, reduce transportation requirements, and support the creation of a self-sustaining circular economy for battery materials in Australia.

The Western Australian government has signalled strong intent to back e-waste recycling infrastructure as part of a broader sustainability agenda. A total of $10 million has been allocated through various grant programs, with the aim of developing infrastructure to handle the growing volume of electronic waste in the region. In line with this commitment, a ban on sending e-waste to landfill was introduced in July of the previous year, reinforcing the need for local recycling solutions.

The new Envirostream facility in WA is expected to become a central element in Livium’s national battery recycling roadmap. This roadmap envisions a robust network for battery collection, sorting, and end-of-life recycling across all states and territories. The facility is designed to operate as a key regional collection and discharge centre, while the downstream processing of battery materials remains concentrated at the Campbellfield site for now. Over time, Livium aims to expand its processing capabilities to include WA and other states, contingent upon the achievement of minimum collection volumes.

This initiative highlights Livium’s broader commitment to advancing Australia’s role in the global battery recycling industry. With increasing demand for sustainable battery disposal and critical minerals recovery, domestic recycling infrastructure offers both environmental and economic value. The national roadmap being developed by Livium seeks to position Australia as a regional leader in battery lifecycle management, reducing the environmental burden of battery waste while supporting clean energy technology supply chains.

Through partnerships with government stakeholders and leveraging its technological expertise, Envirostream is aiming to build an end-to-end solution for battery material recovery. The WA facility represents a foundational stage in that journey, anchoring operations in a state that has demonstrated strong legislative and financial support for sustainable waste management practices.

As the transition to renewable energy and electric mobility accelerates, battery recycling will continue to grow in importance across the global economy. Livium’s strategic planning and engagement with government programs position the company to play a leading role in shaping Australia’s sustainable recycling future, delivering long-term environmental, social, and industrial benefits.
