Highlights

  • Latrobe Magnesium (LMG) receives approval for a 250MW hydropower allocation in Sarawak.
  • Australian Government backs the project with financial support.
  • New milestone paves the way for joint venture discussions.

Latrobe Magnesium (ASX:LMG) has achieved a significant breakthrough for its proposed magnesium production facility in Sarawak, Malaysia. The company has secured approval for a 250-megawatt (MW) hydropower allocation, a crucial step in advancing its 100,000-tonne-per-annum operation.

This approval is conditional on finalizing a Terms Sheet, executing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sarawak Energy, and meeting additional conditions set by the Sarawak Government. Given the high demand for power in the region, this milestone ensures that the project remains viable and moves toward execution.

Advancing Towards Development

The secured hydropower allocation enables Latrobe Magnesium to continue discussions with potential joint venture partners. With clean energy sources becoming a priority in industrial projects, this renewable power allocation aligns with the company's vision for sustainable magnesium production.

Latrobe Magnesium has been working on this project as part of its strategic expansion in Southeast Asia. The Sarawak facility is expected to play a pivotal role in the global magnesium supply chain, given increasing demand across industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction.

Australian Government Backs Expansion Plans

Further strengthening its position, Latrobe Magnesium (LMG) has secured financial backing from the Australian Government through the Southeast Asia Investment Deal Team’s Project Development Support (PDS) Program. This initiative is part of the Australian Government’s A$2 billion Southeast Asia Investment Financing Facility, aimed at boosting Australian trade and investment in the region.

The PDS Program provides funding to assist with advisory work for large-scale projects, helping Australian companies establish a competitive presence in Southeast Asia. Given the competitive nature of the funding, with demand exceeding available resources by four times, Latrobe Magnesium’s selection underscores the project's strategic importance.

A Step Forward for Global Magnesium Supply

With these approvals and funding in place, Latrobe Magnesium (LMG) is well-positioned to advance its Sarawak facility, reinforcing its long-term growth strategy. The company continues to work on securing additional agreements and partnerships to drive the project forward.

As the demand for magnesium grows across global markets, this latest development marks a major step toward establishing a robust supply chain for the future.
