Sarytogan Graphite (ASX:SGA) has reached a pivotal milestone for its graphite exploration project in Kazakhstan, securing a 25-year mining licence from the local government. This approval marks a significant step forward, following extensive environmental studies and community engagement. The mining licence also includes a 20-year extension option, ensuring a long-term framework for operations.
The licence approval, granted just after Christmas, was among the final regulatory requirements before project activities could commence. While expectations pointed to a January issuance, the earlier-than-anticipated approval positions Sarytogan Graphite (SGA) to begin groundwork sooner. Project activities are expected to start within ten working days of the licence's formalization.
The licence permits open-pit mining of graphitic ore, stockpiling, and the establishment of secure repositories for waste-rock, wet tailings, and other mining by-products. Additionally, the company will adhere to a robust environmental monitoring and management framework to maintain compliance with regulations.
Managing director Sean Gregory highlighted the importance of this milestone, describing it as a culmination of years of preparation. According to Gregory, the licence clears a critical path for Sarytogan Graphite to advance towards mine development.
“This achievement represents a major milestone for the Sarytogan graphite project. It is the result of extensive environmental studies and collaborative efforts with local communities,” Gregory said.
The next steps for the company include feasibility studies that are already underway. A 20-tonne sample of graphite ore is being processed at a laboratory in Kazakhstan, with further testing to be conducted globally. One tonne of the sample will be shipped to Australia for flotation testing, followed by purification studies in the United States. These activities are projected to conclude by mid-year.
With the regulatory hurdles cleared, Sarytogan Graphite is now strategically positioned to accelerate the development of its Kazakhstan project. The approval not only underscores the project's viability but also highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and local engagement.
This progress underscores the growing importance of graphite as a critical mineral, vital for applications in renewable energy and advanced technologies. Sarytogan Graphite is poised to capitalize on this momentum as it moves closer to operational readiness.
