- Caldeira REE project aligned with Brazil’s $1.4B strategic minerals initiative
- Government-backed funding targets pilot plant and downstream development
- Mineral resource estimate surges 50% to over 1 billion tonnes
Meteoric Resources (ASX:MEI) has positioned itself for substantial advancement at its Caldeira rare earths project, as the Brazilian government signals its support through a $1.4 billion strategic funding initiative for critical mineral development.
Caldeira has been included in a national program backed by Brazil’s Financial Agency for Studies and Projects (Finep) and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). This initiative is designed to promote the growth of strategic minerals through enhanced production capacity, innovation, and research.
Strategic Momentum with Pilot Plant Development
As part of this development trajectory, Meteoric Resources has submitted a formal application for funding. The proposal outlines plans for constructing a pilot plant and establishing downstream capabilities, including rare earth separation and magnet production. The project will also focus on scaling operations and resolving any existing bottlenecks at the Caldeira site.
This collaboration reflects Brazil’s broader goal to industrialise and secure its supply chain in strategic minerals. Meteoric’s project aligns with national priorities, aiming to drive technological advancement and local economic value.
Resource Growth Strengthens Project Fundamentals
Earlier this year, the Caldeira project marked a notable milestone with an updated mineral resource estimate. Using a 1,000ppm cut-off, the global resource increased by 50%, reaching 1.1 billion tonnes at an average grade of 2,413 parts per million total rare earth oxides (TREO). Importantly, this includes 559ppm of high-value magnetic rare earth oxides, critical for clean energy and defence technologies.
The resource expansion focused on the northern licences of the fully owned Caldeira project and has significantly improved its development potential. Looking ahead, Meteoric Resources plans to incorporate the high-grade Barra do Pacu area into the resource base. This addition is expected in the upcoming quarter and will form part of the project's pre-feasibility study.
Aligned with Brazil’s Industrial Vision
Meteoric’s strategic positioning within Brazil’s funding initiative strengthens its pathway toward downstream integration. The combination of expanded resources and governmental alignment enhances the project's attractiveness and long-term sustainability credentials.
With the government’s push for domestic industrialisation of critical minerals and Meteoric’s proactive development strategy, the Caldeira project could play a pivotal role in reshaping Brazil’s rare earth landscape.
