Highlights

  • WA’s energy sector faces a growing gas supply challenge
  • (CR1) explores natural hydrogen systems as potential solution
  • Early scientific signs support large-scale development potential

Western Australia’s energy landscape is undergoing a major shift. With demand increasing and traditional gas supplies tightening, particularly from key developments like Scarborough and the Perth Basin, the region is heading toward a critical supply gap. In this evolving scenario, Constellation Resources (ASX:CR1) is stepping forward with a bold, innovative approach rooted in natural hydrogen exploration.

The Supply Crisis

Gas prices across Western Australia have surged in recent times, reflecting deeper structural issues. Domestic supply is struggling to keep up, and signs of future shortages are already emerging. The state’s reliance on conventional gas sources may no longer be viable in the medium term, pushing energy stakeholders to seek alternative solutions that are both sustainable and scalable.

Constellation’s Ambitious Play

Constellation Resources (ASX:CR1) is focusing on a new frontier in clean energy: naturally occurring hydrogen-rich gas systems. These are derived from deep, organic-rich shales and could serve as a disruptive alternative in WA’s energy mix.

The company controls an extensive landholding—88,000 square kilometres—across three basin-scale projects in Western Australia. This footprint surpasses the size of the well-known Beetaloo Basin and is entirely held under 100% ownership, giving the company complete operational control.

Its flagship project, the Edmund-Collier Basin, is showing promising signs. Thermal maturity results between 250°C and 450°C—ideal for gas generation—have been recorded. In addition, drilling has revealed Total Organic Carbon (TOC) values peaking at 10.1%, strengthening the case for hydrocarbon potential.

Early Discoveries and Scalable Potential

Initial exploration at Edmund-Collier has confirmed the presence of thermogenic hydrogen—a key breakthrough. The project also boasts a 300-kilometre lateral continuity, suggesting the potential for large-scale development. Importantly, the technology does not depend on costly imports or massive infrastructure setups, making it a potentially more accessible and cost-effective solution for WA’s future gas needs.

Looking Ahead

With critical exploration permits secured and ongoing scientific validation, Constellation Resources is positioning itself to lead the charge in developing natural hydrogen systems. As Western Australia navigates the complexities of its future energy mix, the company’s innovative model could provide a strategic, domestic solution—paving the way for cleaner, more resilient energy infrastructure.
