ABx Group (ASX:ABX), through its majority-owned subsidiary ALCORE, is making significant progress in establishing a cutting-edge pilot plant at Bell Bay, Tasmania. This initiative is set to demonstrate a pioneering process that could transform a byproduct of aluminium smelting into valuable industrial chemicals.
The pilot plant project is strategically positioned next to the Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) aluminium smelter, benefiting from synergies with existing facilities. ALCORE has assembled a team of engineering consultants and contractors to support this venture, including South African-based BFluor Chemicals and Kempe Engineering, a leader in innovative engineering solutions.
In a positive development for the project, ALCORE has received formal environmental guidelines from EPA Tasmania, following a previously submitted notice of intent. This step is crucial as it paves the way for compliance and operational readiness. Additionally, discussions with the George Town Council are progressing well, focusing on planning approvals necessary for the next phases of development.
The equipment essential for the pilot plant's operation, such as an oleum plant, bath reactors, and scrubbers, has been ordered. Delivery is scheduled for late this year, marking a significant milestone in the project timeline. Dr. Mark Cooksey, CEO of ABx Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project's transition from planning to execution. He emphasized the collaborative support from the federal and Tasmanian governments and Rio Tinto, which strengthens the project's foundation.
Moreover, the Tasmanian Government has extended a supportive hand with a $1 million zero-interest, conditional loan. This financial aid is earmarked for the construction and operation of the pilot plant, ensuring that the project remains on a solid financial footing.
Once operational, the pilot plant will showcase ALCORE's unique technology designed to produce hydrogen fluoride from aluminium smelting byproducts. This step is not only a technological advancement but also a strategic move to reduce dependency on imported chemicals. Currently, Australia imports over 80% of its aluminium fluoride needs, primarily from China, despite being a leading producer of primary aluminium metal.
This project represents a significant opportunity for Australia to develop domestic production capabilities for essential chemicals, reducing reliance on international suppliers and enhancing the sustainability and resilience of its industrial base. The commercial success of this pilot could lead to broader adoption of the technology, potentially establishing a new industry standard in chemical production from industrial waste.
