Highlights

  • Green Critical Minerals (GCM) begins construction of VHD graphite pilot plant.
  • VHD graphite blocks have applications in high-performance electronics and energy storage.
  • The project aims to support decarbonisation and energy efficiency solutions.

Green Critical Minerals (ASX:GCM) is advancing its commitment to innovative technology with the commencement of construction on its very high density (VHD) graphite technology pilot plant in New South Wales. This initiative marks a significant step towards the commercialisation of VHD technology, aiming to deliver high-value, sustainable solutions to global markets.

The pilot plant project, which has received all critical components, will begin production of demonstration VHD blocks after commissioning in late 2025. These blocks will then be sent to potential customers for qualification and downstream testing, illustrating the company's proactive approach in securing future partnerships.

Applications and Benefits

The VHD graphite blocks created at this plant will serve multiple high-demand sectors. Smaller VHD blocks will support the development of heat sinks in high-performance computing, enhancing the efficiency and performance of electronics. Larger VHD blocks are tailored for solar-thermal energy storage systems, which are increasingly sought after for their role in decarbonising power generation and industrial processes.

Strategic Vision

Managing Director Clinton Booth highlighted the importance of this construction phase, describing it as a cornerstone in Green Critical Minerals' broader vision. "We are achieving remarkable and rapid progress and are on track for the production of the first demonstration blocks in March next year," he stated. The company is also exploring new research and development partnerships, targeting sectors such as aerospace, defence, and advanced manufacturing to make a significant impact in decarbonisation and energy efficiency solutions worldwide.

Innovative Technology

Developed by Professor Charles Sorrell at the University of New South Wales, the VHD technology produces high-performance graphite blocks with superior thermal and electrical properties at a fraction of conventional costs. The technology employs a 36-hour process at significantly lower temperatures, offering substantial cost and environmental advantages. Booth emphasized the potential for further cost savings by producing graphite products in various shapes and sizes, streamlining the manufacturing process for diverse industrial applications, and reducing waste significantly.

Future Prospects

With VHD graphite blocks having applications in thermal energy storage, semiconductors, high-performance electronics, heat sinks, and critical industries such as defence and nuclear energy, Green Critical Minerals is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation. The company's ongoing efforts to develop and commercialise VHD technology underscore its commitment to driving progress in renewable energy and high-performance electronics.

Green Critical Minerals (GCM) is making significant strides with its VHD graphite technology, promising transformative potential across multiple industries and supporting global efforts towards sustainability and energy efficiency.
