Highlights
- Firebird Metals (FRB) signs four MoUs for manganese product supply.
- Agreements cover up to 70% of manganese sulphate and 100% of manganese tetra-oxide production.
- Strengthens position as a cost-effective supplier for China’s growing EV battery market.
Firebird Metals (ASX:FRB) has taken a significant step forward in its manganese production strategy, securing four non-binding memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with key offtake partners in China. These agreements cover the supply of manganese sulphate and manganese tetra-oxide from the company's upcoming production facility in Jinshi, China.
The MoUs are established with top-tier battery cathode manufacturers, positioning Firebird as a crucial supplier in the expanding electric vehicle (EV) battery market. Under these agreements, the company expects to supply up to 70% of its manganese sulphate production, totaling 50,000 tonnes, and the entirety of its manganese tetra-oxide production, estimated at 10,000 tonnes, in the initial phase of operations.
Strategic Expansion in the Battery Sector
With these agreements, Firebird strengthens its foothold as a cost-effective producer of battery-grade manganese concentrate. The company’s upcoming facility is expected to play a key role in supplying high-purity manganese for lithium-ion battery manufacturing, a sector witnessing rapid growth due to the increasing demand for EVs.
The company’s leadership emphasized the significance of these agreements, highlighting their role in reinforcing Firebird’s position as a vertically integrated, innovative supplier of manganese sulphate (MnSO₄) and manganese tetra-oxide (Mn₃O₄). This strategic move aligns with the evolving battery technology landscape, where many lithium iron phosphate (LFP) plants in China are transitioning to lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) production. The shift underscores manganese's increasing relevance in battery chemistry, making it a critical component in next-generation energy storage solutions.
Advancing Research and Development
The recently signed MoUs follow extensive product distribution and analysis efforts, with Firebird delivering manganese sulphate and tetra-oxide samples from its pilot plant to potential customers. This initiative has been instrumental in demonstrating the high quality of its products, further solidifying demand from leading battery manufacturers.
The company has made notable strides in developing its China-based research and development facility. In 2024, it secured key environmental, energy, and safety permits, acquired industrial land for the plant, and finalized preliminary design plans. With these crucial elements in place, Firebird is well-positioned to commence stage one operations.
By forging strong partnerships with leading industry players, Firebird is strategically advancing toward becoming a key player in the battery materials sector. These developments mark a pivotal moment for the company as it prepares to support the surging demand for high-performance battery components in China and beyond.
