  • Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd (COB) signs MOU with Mount Isa City Council for sulphuric acid supply solutions.
  • ReMine+ technology to reprocess pyrite tailings, addressing local industrial needs sustainably.
  • Collaboration focuses on mitigating impacts of smelter closure and boosting regional economy.

Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd (ASX:COB) has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Mount Isa City Council (MICC) to explore solutions for an anticipated sulphuric acid supply deficit in Northwest Queensland. The agreement aims to address challenges arising from the impending closure of the Glencore Mount Isa copper smelter, which threatens to disrupt regional industries reliant on this critical resource.

The collaboration will leverage COB’s ReMine+ patented technology to reprocess pyrite tailings, unlocking elemental sulphur and metals like cobalt, nickel, and copper. This initiative not only tackles the acid supply shortage but also contributes to economic sustainability by utilizing existing mineral resources and infrastructure in the region.

Addressing Industrial Challenges

The planned closure of the Mount Isa copper smelter by 2030 is expected to create a significant shortfall of sulphuric acid, essential for various industries such as fertilizers, chemicals, and metallurgy. This deficit could jeopardize employment and economic stability in the area. COB and MICC aim to mitigate this by assessing the feasibility of a local sulphuric acid production facility centered around pyrite tailings.

COB’s ReMine+ technology has been successfully demonstrated at its Broken Hill facility, where it has produced high-purity elemental sulphur through the reprocessing of pyrite. The technology offers an eco-friendly solution by reclaiming valuable metals while addressing environmental challenges associated with tailings.

Collaborative Steps for Sustainability

The MOU outlines a roadmap for evaluating technologies, feedstocks, and operational requirements to establish a viable sulphuric acid production plant. MICC will facilitate sample sourcing, while COB conducts proof-of-concept testing to assess the region's mineral suitability. COB will also provide technical advice on plant construction and resource needs.

This initiative aligns with MICC's commitment to ensuring economic sustainability and environmental stewardship. By combining COB’s technological expertise with local resources, the partnership seeks to develop a low-impact, commercially viable solution that benefits all stakeholders.

Future Prospects

The agreement, effective until 2029, underscores the potential of innovative technologies like ReMine+ to address industrial challenges while promoting regional development. This collaboration highlights the importance of sustainable practices in safeguarding resources and fostering economic resilience.
