Champion Iron (ASX:CIA) has entered into a significant partnership with Japan-based Nippon Steel Corporation and Sojitz Corporation to jointly develop the Kamistiatusset (Kami) iron ore mine in Canada. This collaboration signals a strategic move to enhance iron ore production while contributing to the global decarbonization of steelmaking.
Partnership Details
The agreement outlines an initial investment of US$245 million, contributed by Nippon Steel and Sojitz, to acquire a 49% ownership stake in the project. Champion Iron will retain a majority 51% stake in the partnership, ensuring its leadership role in the Kami project. The deal also allows for potential future financial contributions to Champion Iron based on the project's economic outcomes.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nippon Steel will hold a 30% interest, while Sojitz Corporation will own 19%. Both companies will receive proportional allocations of Kami's iron ore production, reflecting their stakes in the partnership.
Development Plans
Champion Iron will continue to operate the Kami project and lead its future development. A definitive feasibility study (DFS), a critical milestone in the project's timeline, is scheduled for completion by mid-2026. Following the study and a potential positive final investment decision (FID), the construction phase is expected to span 48 months.
All three companies have agreed to share development and construction costs, further strengthening the partnership's collaborative nature. The finalization of the deal is anticipated in the first half of 2025.
