  • CERENERGY® battery passes key safety and performance tests.
  • Uses non-flammable sodium chloride instead of lithium.
  • Targets grid and data centre markets for energy safety.

Altech Batteries Ltd (ASX:ATC) has announced promising developments for its solid-state CERENERGY® battery technology, following successful safety and performance testing conducted in collaboration with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute. The tests assessed thermal behavior, charging and discharging cycles, and overall durability of individual battery cells — with results described as exceeding expectations.

The CERENERGY® battery stands out in the energy storage market due to its use of sodium chloride — more commonly known as table salt — as the core component. This alternative to traditional lithium-ion chemistry eliminates the risk of fire or explosion, a feature that positions the technology as a safer solution for sensitive or high-risk environments.

The focus on fire safety is particularly timely, given recent high-profile incidents involving lithium-ion battery fires at large-scale storage facilities, such as one in California. These events have drawn attention to the need for more secure energy storage systems, especially as the demand for renewable energy infrastructure grows.

Altech Batteries is actively pursuing funding for a 120 megawatt-hour production facility in Germany, with the latest test results expected to strengthen the case for investment. The performance data not only confirm the battery's resilience and thermal stability but also help reinforce confidence in its commercial viability.

In addition to its safety profile, CERENERGY® offers supply chain advantages by avoiding critical raw materials like lithium, cobalt, manganese, copper, and graphite — many of which face global supply constraints or are heavily sourced from specific regions like China. This choice aligns with increasing concerns over the sustainability and geopolitical risks of traditional battery supply chains.

The technology has already attracted attention from industries where energy safety is paramount, including grid utilities undergoing renewable transitions and data centres preparing for increased power demands from AI-driven operations. Altech highlighted strong engagement from these sectors during its recent appearance at Hanover Messe, the world’s largest industrial technology trade fair.

With growing market interest, strategic material sourcing, and a focus on safety, Altech Batteries (ATC) continues to position CERENERGY® as a forward-looking solution for next-generation energy storage.
