  • Altech completes key spherification milestone
  • 50% battery capacity boost achieved
  • Pilot plant ready for product evaluation

Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) has successfully completed a critical stage in its advanced Silumina Anodes project — the spherification process — a move that further strengthens its position in the next-generation battery materials space.

This milestone marks a significant step toward commercialising a technology designed to enhance lithium-ion battery performance through the integration of silicon. By incorporating high-capacity silicon into traditional anode materials and using a proprietary alumina coating technique, Altech aims to overcome the historical limitations associated with silicon, particularly particle swelling and rapid degradation.

The spherification process involves creating spherical silicon particles coated with alumina, then embedding them within the voids of graphite. This structure helps mitigate long-term damage to the battery's electrode layer that typically results from silicon expansion. After extensive research and development, the team has fine-tuned the silicon content to 5%, which has demonstrated a 50% increase in battery energy capacity.

To support the rapid development of its Silumina Anode technology, Altech constructed a pilot plant in Germany. While the commissioning phase presented challenges — including delays in equipment delivery, flow issues with ultra-fine silicon powders, and handling complexities — these hurdles have been addressed through engineering modifications and process improvements.

The plant is now operational and producing coated anode materials ready for testing by prospective customers. This is a vital step on Altech’s road to commercialisation and aligns with growing global interest in high-performance battery components.

Altech’s advancement comes at a time when technology-focused companies are gaining investor attention across indices such as the ASX200, with innovation playing a key role in shaping the future of sustainable energy and electric vehicles.

The company’s unique approach, initially involving nanolayer coatings of alumina on individual silicon particles, has now evolved into the use of spherification technology. This has yielded an anode material that not only improves energy density by 50% but also significantly enhances cycle life — all while maintaining material stability.

Such breakthroughs are vital in the broader landscape of ASX dividend stocks, where long-term growth potential and technological innovation are increasingly becoming decisive factors for market positioning.

With the spherification milestone completed, Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) continues to move closer to delivering commercially viable, next-generation battery materials designed for a more energy-efficient future.
