Highlights

  • Altech Batteries (ATC) receives environmental and construction approval for its German battery plant.
  • The facility will produce next-generation CERENERGY sodium-chloride solid-state batteries.
  • Approval strengthens funding prospects with global financial institutions.

Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its CERENERGY battery manufacturing facility in Saxony, Germany. The company has secured environmental and construction clearance under Germany’s Federal Emission Control Act (BImSchG), paving the way for finalizing project financing and initiating construction.

This approval is crucial for Altech Batteries GmbH, the company’s German subsidiary, as it prepares to clear the site and commence development on the 120-megawatt-hour (MWh) production facility. With the growing demand for sustainable energy storage solutions, the CERENERGY project represents a major leap forward in next-generation battery technology.

Streamlining the Approval Process

Altech initiated the application process for a construction and operational license in September 2023. The company worked alongside engineering partner Leadec Services and architecture firm Arikon AG to ensure a smooth approval process.

To expedite project execution, Altech strategically ran the approval process in parallel with the definitive feasibility study (DFS). This approach minimizes potential delays, ensuring that once financing is secured, construction can commence without hurdles.

Boosting Investor Confidence

The final licensing approval is expected to enhance confidence among potential financiers. Group Managing Director Iggy Tan emphasized the company’s proactive approach, stating that running multiple processes concurrently has positioned the project favorably for financing completion.

Following the approval, Altech distributed a funding invitation document to various global financial institutions, receiving initial interest from 10 commercial banks and two venture debt funds. The company, in collaboration with its financial adviser, is now in the process of selecting the most suitable partners.

Advancing Sustainable Energy Solutions

The CERENERGY project is designed to be a game-changer in the energy storage industry. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, CERENERGY batteries rely on sodium-chloride technology, making them fireproof, explosion-proof, and capable of operating in extreme climates.

With a lifespan exceeding 15 years, these batteries eliminate reliance on critical metals like lithium, cobalt, graphite, and copper, reducing exposure to price volatility and supply chain risks. This sustainable alternative positions Altech as a key player in the future of clean energy storage.

As the company moves forward with funding and construction, the CERENERGY project is set to redefine battery technology, offering a reliable and eco-friendly solution for the global energy sector.
