- Kelsian in discussions to extend key Sydney bus contract
- Potential one-year extension for Region 6 operations
- $219 million in expected annual contract revenue
Kelsian Group (ASX:KLS) has entered negotiations with Transport for NSW to extend its existing contract for public bus services in Sydney’s inner west, a move that could see the company’s subsidiary, Transit Systems West, continue operating in the region through to mid-2026.
Transit Systems West has been the appointed operator for Region 6 bus services since 2018, overseeing both the running and maintenance of a fleet of 566 buses. The current agreement is set to conclude on June 30, 2025. If successful, the proposed extension would keep the buses running under Kelsian’s banner until June 30, 2026.
The talks come as Transport for NSW evaluates options for the future of the route, with a competitive tender process on the table should a mutual agreement not be reached. While the outcome of these discussions remains to be seen, a continued partnership would represent a stable revenue stream for Kelsian.
Kelsian has projected contract revenues related to the Region 6 operations at $219 million for the current financial year. This figure includes both the operational management and vehicle maintenance costs across its service footprint. These revenues play a significant role in the company’s broader portfolio of contracted transport services, both domestically and internationally.
The inner west contract is seen as a strategically valuable asset in Kelsian’s urban transport portfolio. The extension could provide the company additional time to enhance efficiencies and explore innovative service options as urban transport systems continue to evolve in line with population growth and sustainability targets.
While the discussions are still underway, the potential for a seamless continuation signals confidence in Transit Systems West’s operational capabilities and Transport for NSW’s willingness to maintain service consistency in one of Sydney’s busiest transport regions.
Kelsian’s footprint in the Australian transport sector includes ferry and bus services across several states. The company continues to build on its strategy of expanding its presence in high-demand public transport networks, with Sydney remaining a central focus.
With the final decision resting on the outcome of these negotiations, market watchers will be keeping an eye on any developments that could influence Kelsian’s near-term growth trajectory and its standing in the competitive public transport landscape.
