Investors are witnessing a substantial downturn in ResMed Inc.'s (ASX: RMD) share price, which has plummeted by 13% to AU$27.790 in afternoon trading this Monday. The market reaction comes swiftly following the release of pivotal clinical trial results related to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) treatment in the United States.
Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE: LLY), a global pharmaceutical powerhouse, recently disclosed detailed findings from its SURMOUNT-OSA phase 3 clinical trials. These trials assess tirzepatide injection, marketed as Mounjaro and Zepbound, for treating moderate-to-severe OSA in adults with obesity, with and without positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. Tirzepatide, originally an antidiabetic medication, has been under scrutiny for its potential benefits in addressing sleep disorders.
Clinical Triumphs and Market Response
According to the trial results, tirzepatide has achieved significant milestones across primary and secondary efficacy endpoints. Notably, participants treated with the highest doses experienced a notable reduction of up to 62.8% in the apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI), translating to approximately 30 fewer instances of airflow restriction or blockage per hour of sleep compared to those on a placebo.
Furthermore, a substantial percentage of participants (43% in Study 1 and 51.5% in Study 2) met the criteria for disease resolution, defined as achieving an AHI of fewer than 5 events per hour, or an AHI of 5-14 events per hour coupled with a satisfactory Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score. The ESS measures daytime sleepiness, a common symptom of OSA.
Dr. Atul Malhotra, commenting on these breakthrough findings, emphasised the clinical significance for patients grappling with moderate-to-severe OSA and obesity. He noted that tirzepatide not only reduced sleep disruptions but also facilitated disease resolution for a substantial portion of trial participants.
Jeff Emmick, MD, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Product Development at Eli Lilly, underscored the therapeutic potential of tirzepatide amidst a lack of pharmaceutical options addressing the underlying causes of OSA. He highlighted that these results mark a critical advancement in managing a complex disease affecting millions in the U.S. alone.
The sharp decline in ResMed's share price reflects investor concerns over the potential impact of tirzepatide's success on the market for OSA treatments. With Eli Lilly's findings indicating robust efficacy and disease resolution, there is heightened anticipation surrounding future regulatory and market dynamics in the sleep disorder treatment landscape.
