Highlights

  • Healthscope (ASX:HSO) has not fully paid its March rent for 11 hospitals owned by HealthCo Healthcare & Wellness REIT (ASX:HCW).
  • HealthCo Healthcare has issued breach notices and received partial payment.
  • The REIT is considering alternative hospital operators if the issue remains unresolved.

Healthscope (ASX:HSO), Australia's second-largest private hospital operator, has encountered rental payment challenges for several of its facilities. The company has not fully met its March rent obligations for 11 hospitals owned by HealthCo Healthcare & Wellness REIT (ASX:HCW), prompting concerns over lease agreements and future tenancy arrangements.

HealthCo Healthcare, the real estate investment trust managing these properties, informed shareholders that it had issued breach notices to Healthscope due to the incomplete payment. While a partial payment has been received, the REIT is closely monitoring the situation and assessing potential next steps.

In response to the non-payment, HealthCo Healthcare has indicated that if the outstanding rent is not cleared, it will explore alternative hospital operators to take over the tenancies. The REIT has reportedly received interest from multiple parties, including the private equity arm of its parent company, HMC Capital (ASX:HMC), expressing interest in acquiring the hospital assets.

The situation underscores broader financial and operational pressures within the healthcare sector. As one of the key players in private hospital management, Healthscope’s ability to meet its lease obligations is being closely watched. Meanwhile, HealthCo Healthcare remains proactive in securing stable tenancy agreements to ensure the long-term viability of its hospital assets.

Stakeholders will be keeping a close eye on how Healthscope addresses the payment issue and whether HealthCo Healthcare moves forward with transitioning to new hospital operators. Further developments in this matter could influence strategic decisions for both companies and impact the broader private healthcare infrastructure landscape.
