Highlights
- Tamboran Resources (TBN) secures agreements to deliver the Sturt Plateau Pipeline.
- APA Group (APA) to construct, own, and operate the critical infrastructure.
- Pipeline set to connect Shenandoah South Pilot Project to the Amadeus Gas Pipeline.
Tamboran Resources (ASX:TBN) has entered binding agreements with APA Group (ASX:APA) to advance the delivery of the Sturt Plateau Pipeline (SPP). This marks significant progress toward the supply of natural gas in Australia’s Northern Territory, facilitating future energy needs.
The agreement will see APA Group construct, own, and operate a 12-inch diameter, 37-kilometre pipeline. The SPP will link the proposed Sturt Plateau Compression Facility (SPCF) to APA’s existing Amadeus Gas Pipeline (AGP). This infrastructure will transport gas volumes under a long-term agreement between Tamboran Resources and the Northern Territory Government.
Key Agreements and Timelines
Tamboran Resources and its partner Daly Waters Energy, LP (DWE), have executed critical agreements, including a Development Agreement, long-term Gas Transportation Agreement (GTA), and Connection Agreement. The pipeline will supply gas for the Shenandoah South Pilot Project, expected to commence production in the first half of 2026.
The contracted foundation capacity on the SPP will span until 2041, aligning with the long-term Gas Sales Agreement. Tamboran Resources and DWE will retain competitive rights for access and pricing beyond the initial term.
APA Group has already progressed the project’s design and approval processes and expects to order essential long-lead items before the end of 2024. Construction activities are planned for the latter half of 2025, with the pipeline becoming operational in 2026.
Energy Supply and National Impact
Tamboran Resources, holding significant acreage in the Beetaloo Subbasin, plays a leading role in strengthening energy security for the Northern Territory. Gas remains the primary source of electricity in the region, and Tamboran Resources aims to ensure a consistent supply.
APA Group’s involvement further underscores the project’s importance in addressing the region’s energy demands. APA CEO Adam Watson highlighted the development of the Beetaloo Basin as essential to mitigating potential domestic gas shortfalls.
With most of the Northern Territory’s electricity powered by gas-fired generation, Tamboran Resources’ Shenandoah South Pilot Project is expected to account for a substantial portion of the region’s energy supply starting in 2026.
This collaboration ensures critical infrastructure will deliver reliable energy solutions while adhering to high environmental standards and maintaining partnerships with local Native Title Holders.
