Highlights
- - Strike Energy (STX) completes evaluation at Walyering East-1 well.
- - Independent assessment indicates strong gas potential in key zones.
- - Production testing scheduled for further exploration in 2024.
Strike Energy (ASX:STX) concluded 2024 with a significant update on its Walyering East-1 exploration well, solidifying its position as a key player in Australia’s energy sector. The company announced that its logging and evaluation program had been completed, showing encouraging signs of a potential gas discovery in the Cattamarra Formation.
The exploration team at Strike Energy had maintained confidence throughout the drilling process, especially while targeting the primary A and D sands within the formation. Their optimism was well-founded as the mud log observations and other indicators pointed towards a promising outcome. Although gas sample retrieval remains pending, the company’s team has highlighted positive preliminary results.
Key Findings from Walyering East-1
The independent petrophysical assessment revealed a net gas pay of approximately 13.4 metres across two distinct intervals. These zones were identified within a gross interval of about 42.7 metres and demonstrated porosity levels peaking at 16%, with an average of 12%. Reservoir pressure was estimated at 4,953 psi, further reinforcing the potential for a meaningful gas discovery.
However, Strike Energy faced operational challenges during the evaluation. Tool failures and challenging drilling conditions prevented the immediate retrieval of hydrocarbon samples. Despite this setback, the company remains optimistic about future testing phases to confirm the discovery.
A Year of Challenges and Wins
2024 has been a turbulent yet rewarding year for Strike Energy. Earlier in the year, the company had to defer a major $3.3 billion project as it refocused its efforts on exploration activities. This pivot led to the “best-ever” discovery at its Erregulla Deep-1 well and has now culminated in the encouraging results at Walyering East-1.
The company’s activity at Walyering East-1 is set to continue into 2024. Strike Energy plans to run production tests to gather critical gas samples. If the outcomes align with expectations, the company anticipates declaring a formal discovery at the site.
The developments at Walyering East-1 add momentum to Strike Energy’s exploration efforts, positioning the company to further strengthen its presence in the energy market. As testing progresses, the results will likely capture significant attention from the broader energy sector.
